Florence Merriam published nearly 100 journal articles and ten books. Among them, my favorite title of 1896:
Because of the word "tenderfoot" I started thinking about Florence's footwear. Were her 19th-century lady naturalist pioneer working shoes like the top photo, "period correct for the late 1850s to the 1880s"? As she was organizing at Smith College the first chapter of the Audubon Society was she wearing something like these blue beauties?
In photos, you can on only guess at how she was shod. But I know Flo and I know that under that brooch and white lace dress it was boots.
